The Principal's News

Published by Beachmere State School

Wow, what a terrific start we have had to 2019!  We could not have asked for a better start, with students very quickly adjusting to their new routines and getting straight into learning.

I would like to welcome all of our students, staff, parents and community back for another great year at Beachmere State School.

Welcome to new staff:

On behalf of our school I would like to welcome the following new staff members:

Year 2 Teacher: Miss Rebecca Finn

Year 4 Teacher: Miss Kelly Keough

Guidance Officer: Mrs Annette Waterton

SEP Teacher: Mrs Louise Davie

Our new staff have settled in beautifully to our school environment, already forging great relationships with staff, students and parents.  We are looking forward to working with them this year.

Facility Upgrades

We have been very busy over the holiday period, completing several facilities upgrades. It has been great to come back to upgraded classrooms and improved facilities.  Over the holiday break, the following projects were occurring:

Artificial turf around administration building where the grass does not grow (including school logo and indigenous map of Australia)

Enacting arborist report (trimming and removal of unsafe foliage)

Disability access to the computer hub (ramp and veranda installed)

Artificial turf to year 3 and year 4 eating  area

Classroom upgrade of all four classrooms in block 2 (including carpet, painting, teaching walls and ICT’s)

Repaint of all four classrooms in block 3

Parent Welcome BBQ

We will host a welcome BBQ this afternoon (6 February) at 2.45pm to welcome all  parents, students & family members to the 2019 School Year.  The BBQ will be held at the front of the school outside Admin Block.  Please come along, have a free sausage on bread and meet our very dedicated teachers, teacher aides and Admin Staff.

Parent Information Sessions Week 3

Teachers will open their classrooms next week to share their learning programs with parents/caregivers.  All parents/caregivers should have received a class newsletter    indicating when your child’s class teacher will host this. We hope you can make it to these sessions and meet your child’s teacher.

Our Student Leaders’ Induction Ceremony will take place on Monday 25 February at 1.30pm.  This special event will be held in our school hall.  Parents and community members are most welcome to attend.

Uniform Expectations

It is an expectation that all Beachmere students wear full school uniform every day.  Our uniform includes school polo shirt, wide brimmed hat (preferably school hat), school shorts and closed in shoes (preferably black with white socks).  Students are not permitted to wear caps as they are not sun-safe.  Please ensure that your child wears the correct uniform to school.

P & C Meeting

Our first P & C Meeting for 2019 will be held on Tuesday 12 February.  The meeting will be held in our staff room commencing at 4pm.  I encourage all parents and community members to attend.  It would be wonderful to see some new faces join our P & C this year.

Volunteers Induction

Our school is seeking the much appreciated support of volunteers to help with various educational programs this year.

A Volunteer Induction will be held Thursday 21 February at 2pm in our   Library and will run for approximately 30 minutes. This is a compulsory requirement for all volunteers wishing to work at Beachmere State School. If you are unable to make this session, there will be other sessions offered throughout the term.  We hope you can make it.

Thank you Mr Bird

The 10 February marks the 19 years of volunteer service by Mr Dick Bird at Beachmere State School.  The support and assistance Mr Bird offers to students, staff and families over the past 19 years has been outstanding.  We both congratulate Mr Bird on this milestone and thank him for his continuous dedication to our school community.

Attendance – What a Start!

What an amazing start to the school year we have had with our attendance.  Attendance continues to be a key priority for our school as we know how much it can impact student achievement. Well done to all of our classes for week 1!  As you can see, every class reached well above our whole school target of 93%.  Let’s work hard to keep this up all year!

Leave

During weeks 4, 5 and 6, I will be taking some personal leave.  During this time, Mrs Tennille Knight will be Acting Principal and Ms Jill Scott will be acting Deputy Principal.

Yours in Education

The Tuckshop is a great way for parents, family and community members to get involved in supporting our students. The  students think it is fantastic to see their loved ones  volunteering in the  Tuckshop. If you have an hour to spare, our fantastic Tuckshop Convenor would love help getting the students lunches organised

Chaplain's Chat

Published by Beachmere State School

Welcome back students and staff to a new year at Beachmere State School. I hope everyone had a great time over the school holidays and I trust everyone is refreshed and ready to study hard in 2019. I would also like to say a big warm welcome to all our new students for 2019. I hope that you all have fun and learn lots in the coming year here at Beachmere School.

As school chaplain, I am available to students and parents three days a week Monday to Wednesday. Students are able to approach me directly with their concerns or through referrals from parents or teachers. Student’s access to the chaplain is on a voluntary basis and  continuing one-to-one support with the chaplain requires parental consent. If you feel your child requires additional support of pastoral care, please feel free to contact me or speak to your child’s class teacher. You can contact me through the school office.

Our breakfasts will recommence next week (Week 3) Wednesday, 13 February the usual times.

Blessings to you all,

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Published by Beachmere State School

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Update

Welcome back to 2019 at Beachmere State School. This year promises to be a great year for the school. The first week started well as if was full of smiles and positivity from all members of the staff and students.

Below is the process for the school-wide reward program, the “Pelican Awards”. The aim of this process is to encourage student participation in their active learning behaviours and adherence to the Four Cares of Learning, School, Others and Self.

These awards are tracked using “Pelican Tickets” and are tracked in students Pelican Diaries or on a Pelican recording grid. Pelican tickets are cut in half. The full colour section goes in the   Pelican Diary to count towards this program and the named section goes in the pelican boxes to be drawn out for the instant prize ($1 tuckshop voucher) on parade.

The award process is as follows:

25 Pelicans = Student acknowledged on parade (Blue Pelican Pride certificate – handed out by class teacher).

50 Pelicans = Presented on parade (Bronze Pelican Pride certificate ). Photo taken with the Principal after parade, printed with 50 pelican’s border and sent home.

75 Pelicans = Certificate (Silver Pelican Pride certificate ) and name on the school sign for the week

100 Pelicans = Certificate (Gold Pelican Pride certificate ) and King/Queen for a day.        Students will be presented with a crown and cape at morning parade. Teachers and     students bow to them during the day.

125 Pelicans = Certificate (Platinum Pelican Pride certificate ) and lunch with a teacher of their choice.

150 Pelicans = Certificate (Black Pelican Pride certificate ) and “Pelican Pride” lapel pin (badge).

It is important to also note that:

· Pelican tickets are given out at any time, whether in class or not, to encourage expected behaviour or reinforce a positive behaviour change.

· This is a year long process, run individually with no reset at term or semester break (at this stage of the programs implementation).

· Names of students reaching a threshold are emailed to SWEO (Mr Turk) by COB Thursday for parade on the following Monday afternoon.

· This system does not affect/override/negate the current system where names are drawn for prizes

· A text message will be sent to parents at  milestones from 50 Pelicans onwards as their certificates are presented on parade.

If you have any questions about this positive behaviour program, please contact Mr Turk through the school administration.

I am looking forward to working with you all this year!
